Soaking the stamp will result in the cancellation's ink to run into the design, totally compromising the caliber of the stamp.

How do you preserve books in mint condition?

I am buying several first editions of one of my favorite series and was wondering how best to keep them in mint condition. I have already read all of the books and plan on buying reading copies at a later date. I am looking for near expert opinions on the preservation of these novels. I plan on getting a bookcase that locks and hopefully one with climate control as well...not for awhile though. I assume I will need a book holder and dust jackets maybe? I am quite clueless.

Keep them away from extreme temperatures, dampness, dust, and sunlight. Get some mylar -- most used book stores keep it to protect the covers of older/more valuable books, and chances are they'll let you buy some if you don't want to order the larger amounts online.
